The Legendary: A Film About The Roots

Cam Be (director/editor) and Jeff Baraka (Interviewer/co-producer) accompanied The Roots for a few stops on last year’s Hennessy Artistry tour, and got some awesome footage. Cam Be describes his work: “In this film I wanted to not only highlight the versatility of a group that has played with most everyone in the industry. But also capture candid moments of real human beings just trying to share the gifts they have been given to the best of their abilities.”

The Roots is an American hip hop/neo soul band formed in 1987 by Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They’ve worked with numerous artists in the past, including Lauryn Hill, Monsters of Folk, J Dilla, Snoop Dogg, to John Legend to name a few. Described as having a jazzy, eclectic approach to hip hop which still includes live instrumentals. A band that never ceases to amaze us. The Roots took home 3 Grammy Awards this year for:

  • Best Group or Duo R&B Vocal Performance for Shine
  • Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for “Hang on in There” (with John Legend)
  • Best R&B Album for Wake Up!
