DIYDS – Ring Light

SO, I had been searching up and down across the interwebs for a Ring Light that would produce a constant flow of light, at a reasonable cost. I generally like to buy products that are official and backed by a reputable company, a quality product means quality footage (usually). The reality of this situation is, Ring Lights are mostly made for still photography, they are generally very small and only flash based. This is the complete opposite of what I wanted, I wanted mine to be BIG and provide constant light. Well as it turns out, these are highly coveted items, they either cost 5k or you just can’t find them at all. I think you gotta have some ill industrial plugs that I for sure do not have. But it is the FUTURE, as all great ideas are spread these days, I simply turned to the holy grail of DIY culture, Youtube. Beware, there are some great things on Youtube, but of course there is a bunch of crap being spread around by some pretty silly people (but you know that?!?). As it turns out there are a couple of descent tutorials on how to build your own light (here is the one I used). I hit the local hardware store and after about $65 bucks (BK price) I had the materials to get this shit crackin! Now of course you need a couple tools, power tools preferably, but aside from that and having the basic understanding that electricity can kill you and burn your house to the gound, this project is a snap. The build took me about 10 hours, most of this time was spent striping wire and wiring the lights up. Don’t get it twisted I made this in my apt, so if that is your excuse don’t let that hold you back. Now if you can’t make this yourself, I would say just buy the parts and have someone do it for you, it’s cheap and amazing. This is a really dope way to upgrade the drunk pictures you take with friends while raging in your living room.

The photos up above in the Flickr set are untouched, we were kinda saucy so there are some soft shots in there, but no Photoshop or anything.

Here is another tutorial, this guy really goes in on his wood work, I want mine to be this pretty, although he fails as far as making a stand for it, it should be tripod mountable…
