De La Barracuda x Boxing

De La Barracuda has got to be one of my favorite spots on Melrose. Not only does it sell some of the freshest  threads, but it also has a hair salon and just recently, they’ve opened a boxing club! Whaaaat?! When you walk in, you will see punching bags hovering over a padded floor right in the middle of the store. Sprinkled on the parameters are digs by De La Barracuda as well as other well-known lines. And if you’re lucky, you will see the store dog, Umbrella, wandering and greeting customers. By the way, Umbrella is a real dog and a sweetheart at that, so don’t expect to see some scary, over-sized character costume, if that’s what you were thinking.

Yesterday, I dropped by to check out the noon boxing class. I was impressed to see that the class looked super intense; yes I do enjoy the occasional aerobics class, but if I had a choice, I’d rather break a sweat in a hardcore class such as this. When I mean hardcore, I don’t mean 24-hour Fitness or Crunch status, I mean, you will want to cry right after the warm-up…HARDCORE. The crew at De La Barracuda are super cool and friendly and they gave me some passes to take a trial class. Even the class’s instructor, Alex, approached me and cracked a couple of jokes. I have to admit that he looked intimidating, but he was actually very personable. Then I thought to myself, “Well yeah, he is NOW, but wait until class.”

So that night, I attended the 7:00 class. I made sure to arrive early so that one of the crew members could hook me up with some hand wraps. I proceeded to the padded floor and reserved my spot. Within the first couple of minutes, I already knew this class was going to put us to work. As I assumed, Alex is a cool cat, but when it comes down to the art of boxing, he will make you want to either vomit, cry or scream obscenities at him. I would suggest not doing the latter because you probably wouldn’t want your ass beat. I suggest you drop the f bomb and other potty words in your head.

I won’t give away too much about the workout, only because you need to check it out for yourself. All I can say is, after taking a class, you will get a taste of the kind of workouts professional boxers get. This place is legit. And hell, while you’re there, be sure to pick up some pieces to add to your wardrobe. Go here, to see their line.
